Chapter 3 - Assignment Guidelines

How to Insert and Attribute Images

The best place to search for images that are licensed for reuse is Flickr. It has a large database of images that are licensed for reuse. When using these images, you can be absolutely sure that you are using images that do not have a copyright.

For CopyPress assignments, we only use images from Flickr Creative Commons (unless otherwise stated in the Style Guide).

How to Search for and Insert Flickr Images

Search:

  • Perform a search from the Flickr Creative Commons Search Page
  • When you find a photo that you would like to use, click to open it
  • If you do not find a photo that you would like to use, go back to the Creative Commons Search Page to search again. Do not search from the Flickr search bar as that is not within the Creative Commons Search.

Insert:

  • Click on the down arrow in the right-hand column
  • Select “View all sizes”

Apples Flickr Photo Sharing

  • On the next page, select the size “Medium 500” (if Medium 500 is not an option, choose the next closest size)
  • Right click on the photo and select “Copy Image Location” or “Copy Image URL”
  • On the article page in the CMS, place the cursor in the article content where you would like to insert the image
  • Click on insert/edit image (tree icon)
  • When the image box opens, paste the Image URL into the Image URL box
  • Click the green insert button (Say yes to the pop-up box)

Attribute:

  • Add the attribution under the image
  • Write attribution using the following format: Image via Flickr by [Username]
  • Link to the Webpage by adding the Webpage URL on the word Flickr (Need help inserting links? Review instructions in the Editorial Guide)
  • Don’t link to the Image URL (the same URL that you used to insert the image)
  • Example: Image via Flickr by ollesvensson

Understanding URLs for Images

Don’t use the user page URL for anything in the attribution.

Other Options for Creative Commons Flickr Search

You can use two following other options for finding Creative Commons Flickr Images. Insert them into your article in the same way as described above.

Image Search from Flickr Advanced Search

  • If you want to search directly from Flickr’s advanced search, you need to filter the results to show only images that are licensed for reuse
  • From the Flickr homepage, select the search icon then select Advanced Search
  • Remember, you must be logged in to access photo URLs

Flickr Search

  • On the Advanced Search page enter your search term
  • Select “Only search within Creative Commons-licensed content” and search

Image Search From Creative Commons

  • Only use images from Flickr that are Licensed for Commercial Reuse

  • When you find a photo that you would like to use, click to open it
